Mustard Gas Elimination

The mission at the U.S. Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground (Maryland) was to destroy a 1,452-metric ton stockpile of liquid mustard gas agent.  

Philadelphia Mixing Solutions was awarded the contract to supply the very critical mixing equipment for this application.  The scope included full scale process performance testing using approved simulates liquids that duplicated the properties of the actual process.  This work was demonstrated in our on-site full scale test facility, where we duplicated all operating conditions of the process.  

In additional to the very critical process requirements, the equipment was also designed to meet the following mechanical requirements:

• Worst possible seismic event using our Department of Defense (DOD) approved analysis procedures
• Mixer shaft shut-off device approved by the DOD for mustard gas service
• Natural frequency analysis of the mixer and tank system to ensure safe operation

The safe and reliable operation of this site gained world recognition and has proven the full scale aqueous process for the six remaining stockpile sites in the United States.
